What Are Sex Toys? A Beginner’s Guide to Every Category

A sex toy is a device designed to stimulate the body for sexual pleasure. The seven product families, the terms on every spec sheet, and the checks before a first order.

What is a sex toy? Here is the one-sentence answer, and it is the one worth keeping if you source, import or sell these products.

A sex toy is a device designed to stimulate the body for sexual pleasure; the category covers vibrators, love eggs, male strokers, cock rings, anal toys, Kegel balls and app-controlled devices, and the same products are also called sexual toys, sex aids, marital aids and adult toys.

Everything below unpacks that sentence into something you can work from: the seven product families and what separates them, a glossary of the terms on every spec sheet, and the checks that matter before you place a first order. The tone stays technical, because you are reading this as a buyer rather than as a browsing shopper.

What a Sex Toy Is, and the Other Names for It

That definition does two jobs for you: it says what the product does, and it says where the boundary of the category sits. A device belongs here because of its intended use, not because of its price, its material or the shelf you put it on.

What are sexual toys, then, as opposed to sex toys? The same thing. The category carries five common names, and they are interchangeable rather than technical:

Sex toys. The most widely used term in retail and in search.

Sexual toys. A slightly more formal variant of the same phrase.

Sex aids. An older, softer synonym that carries no clinical meaning and does not signal a medical device.

Marital aids. Older still, and now mostly used in markets or channels where plainer wording is restricted.

Adult toys. The broadest retail term, and the one that usually stretches to cover accessories such as lubricant, storage pouches and cleaning products alongside the devices themselves.

Pick one term and keep it consistent across your catalogue, packaging and paid listings, because mixing four synonyms across one range splits your own search footprint.

One scope note before you read the map. This page answers what is a sex toy and what sits in each category, and it stops there. It does not rank products or tell you which model to buy, and it is not a substitute for a decision guide. If you already know the category you want and need help picking inside it, read WINYI’s guide on how to choose adult products instead. Nothing here is medical advice, and no category on this page is a medical device or carries a health claim.

The Full Category Map: Seven Product Families

If you arrived asking what is a sex toy, this map is the practical answer. The market divides into seven product families — vibrators, love eggs, male strokers, cock rings, anal toys, Kegel balls and app-controlled devices — and you can see all of them in WINYI’s full product catalogue.

What organises that list is body area and mechanism, not price. A family tells you where a product is used and how it generates the sensation, and nothing about whether it sells for three dollars or thirty, which is why a price-band view of the market is useless for sourcing. Two toys at the same wholesale cost can sit in different families and hand you completely different tooling, testing and packaging.

The map you just read overlaps on purpose. A single device can belong to two families at once, and an app-controlled vibrator is the obvious case: it is a vibrator by mechanism and an app-controlled device by control method. So treat the seven families as labels you apply to a product, not as boxes that each product fits into once. What is an adult toy in practice? Usually one form factor plus one control method, which is what you put on the spec sheet.

How Each Category Works

Seven subsections follow, in the same order as the table. Each one gives you the mechanism, the variables you actually specify, and the detail that shows up as a complaint when it is left out.

Vibrators. A vibrator uses a motor to produce oscillation against or inside the body. It is the widest family by far, and the one you will meet in the most shapes: bullets, wands, rabbits, G-spot models and suction stimulators all sit inside it. WINYI’s own vibrator range runs to 98 listings, which tells you how much variation one family holds.

The variables you actually specify are motor type and placement, amplitude, mode count and the noise figure. Two vibrators with identical silicone and mode counts can feel nothing alike, so check placement rather than trusting a listing’s mode count. Broad-contact wand styles sit in WINYI’s massager range rather than under vibrators, so check both lists when you map a range. For the shapes themselves, WINYI’s guide to vibrator types covers bullet, wand, rabbit, G-spot and suction.

Love eggs. A love egg is a compact internal form, usually a single motor in a smooth shell, with low amplitude compared with a full-size vibrator. Most current models you will source are rechargeable and pair with a remote. WINYI’s WY0561 ELSA is a working example: liquid silicone, a waterproof body, two motors and a remote in the box.

Two specifics are worth pinning down on any egg you source. The first is the retrieval method, because an internal product needs a reliable way out, so confirm whether you are getting a silicone cord, a flared end or a tethered remote. The second is remote pairing and range, since a remote that drops its link will be the complaint you hear most on this family. Neither detail is always printed on a listing, so ask for both in writing before you order — the WY0561 page, for instance, publishes no mode count and no IPX numeral for that model, which is exactly the kind of gap a sample request closes.

Male strokers. A stroker is a textured sleeve used on the penis, moved either by hand or by a motor. You will also see the family called masturbators, sleeves or cups, and WINYI lists it as masturbators. Sizing comes from the internal opening and the sleeve length rather than the external shell, so a cup that looks large in your photos can still be a tight sleeve.

Cleaning access is the second thing you specify. A sleeve you cannot open out or reach fully is slower to clean and harder to dry, which drives returns. Ask whether the sleeve is removable, and ask for the internal dimension in millimetres rather than a size label.

Cock rings. A cock ring is a constriction ring worn at the base, either rigid, stretchable or adjustable, and many current models add a small motor. Sizing is the whole safety story on this family, so the numbers you specify are internal diameter, stretch behaviour and how quickly the ring can be released — see WINYI’s cock ring range for the shapes on offer. Follow the wear-time guidance printed by the manufacturer, and keep that guidance on your own packaging rather than dropping it.

Anal toys. An anal toy is an insertable product with a tapered body and, in any responsible design, a flared base. Healthline’s sex toy shopping guide describes the flared base as the defining feature of the family, and the reason is retrieval rather than comfort. A plug without one can be hard to remove, which is why WINYI’s anal range is built on flared-base designs.

The three specifications you check are material, taper profile and base width. Taper controls how gradual insertion feels, base width controls whether the product stays put, and material controls how well it cleans. Treat vibration, remotes and app control as extras layered on top of those three, and settle the three before you price anything.

Kegel balls. Kegel balls, also sold as Ben Wa balls or pelvic floor trainers, are weighted spheres marketed for pelvic-floor exercise. They are usually unpowered, though you will find current models that add vibration. WINYI lists five, and several ship as graduated kits so the user steps up through heavier balls rather than starting at the top.

Treat this family carefully in your copy. These are exercise products, not medical devices, so keep therapeutic and health outcomes out of your listings. What you can specify is the weight steps, the cord or retrieval material, and whether the set is graduated or sold as single weights.

App-controlled devices. An app-controlled device is any product from the six families above with a wireless link to a phone app. WINYI develops its app in house, which matters more than it sounds: an app built by the factory is one you can brand, and one whose roadmap is not controlled by a third party. According to WINYI’s app page, it connects locally over Bluetooth, supports long-distance control when both users have Wi-Fi or a 4G or 5G connection, and allows up to seven toys on one device.

Two questions decide whether this family works for your brand. Who owns the app and the account data, and which of your models are actually supported on it? Ask for the supported model list in writing, because a category page listing app-ready form factors is not the compatibility list you need.

Terminology Glossary: G-Spot, Suction, Air-Pulse, IPX

Four terms do most of the work on the spec sheets you will read, and three of them get used loosely.

G-spot. The G-spot, or Gräfenberg spot, is a region on the inner vaginal wall that product shapes are designed around, and it is not a confirmed separate organ. Healthline’s G-spot guide, medically reviewed by Stacy A. Henigsman, DO, describes it as part of the wider clitoral network rather than a distinct anatomical structure, and notes a 2017 study that set out to find it and came up empty. So read “G-spot vibrator” as a description of a curve and a contact angle, and keep anatomy claims out of your own copy.

Suction versus air-pulse. Suction and air-pulse are not the same mechanism. True suction removes air to create a vacuum against the skin. WebMD’s guide to clitoral suction toys, medically reviewed by Neha Pathak, MD, draws the line clearly: pumps remove air to create a vacuum, while the toys work by creating airflow and pressure using air circulation. In other words, most products sold as suction toys pulse air through a nozzle rather than pull a vacuum. Describe yours accurately, because a buyer who expects a vacuum and gets an air pulse will say the product underperforms.

IPX. IPX is an ingress-protection numeral for water, set out in IEC 60529, “Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)”. The published standard defines each numeral by the test it has to survive, not by a lifetime promise. In the standard’s own test clauses, numeral 4 is tested with an oscillating tube or spray nozzle, numeral 5 with a 6.3 mm nozzle, numeral 6 with a 12.5 mm nozzle, numeral 7 covers temporary immersion between 0.15 m and 1 m, and numeral 8 covers continuous immersion on terms agreed between the parties.

That last point is the one you will see buyers miss: IPX8 is not automatically better in a way you can print, because its conditions are agreed rather than fixed. An IPX rating also describes a test condition on a new unit rather than a guarantee for the life of the product, so write your cleaning instructions to the rating you actually hold. The tank in the photo above is that test in practice: product submerged at a 1 m depth mark, checked after the immersion period, not just splashed.

Table: four spec-sheet terms in plain language.

TermPlain-language definitionWhy it matters
G-spotRegion on the inner vaginal wall, part of the clitoral networkDescribes a product curve, not a proven organ
SuctionRemoving air to create a vacuum against the skinPumps do this, most toys do not
Air-pulsePulsed airflow and pressure delivered through a nozzleExplains why suction toys feel as they do
IPXWater ingress numeral defined by IEC 60529 test conditionsSets the cleaning method you can promise
Body-safe siliconeCured silicone used as the skin-contact surfaceGrade, cure and finish decide cleanability

Need the documents behind these terms? WINYI’s certification page sets out which reports and certificates exist, and the team confirms scope per model and per destination market. Ask for the file set for your market.

Materials

Three materials cover most of what you will source: liquid silicone as the skin-contact surface, ABS as the rigid plastic for shells, buttons and remotes, and TPE as a softer, lower-cost alternative to silicone. You can order all three from WINYI, plus PVC, leather and selected metal parts.

Be careful with the material marketing you repeat. WINYI’s own silicone versus TPE guide makes the point that cleanability depends on grade, cure, construction and finish rather than on the material name, and that terms such as nonporous, medical grade and body safe need a defined test basis before they mean anything. Material choice has a manufacturing consequence too: Pantone colour matching works on silicone and ABS, while very soft TPE is generally not suitable for laser engraving, so your branding method can rule a material in or out — decoration method belongs in the same conversation as the material.

There is a regulatory layer you cannot skip. Under EU rules, Commission Delegated Directive 2015/863 sets the restricted-substance list for electrical and electronic equipment at ten entries, including lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium and four phthalates, at 0.1 percent by weight in homogeneous materials for most entries and 0.01 percent for cadmium. Those limits are why a soft-plastic formulation is a compliance question for you and not only a cost question.

None of that is settled on paper alone. Units are run through ageing and charging tests, then handled and inspected one by one before anything reaches a box, which is where a seam, a moulding line or a button recess gets caught.

Where a claim such as body safe or medical grade matters to your listing, ask which test report supports it and for which model. WINYI’s certification and compliance guide walks through the document set that should arrive with a quotation.

How to Choose a First Product

Start from the category, not from the product you happened to see first. Ask which of the seven families fits the intended use, and your shortlist drops from thousands of items to a few dozen.

What are sex aids in sourcing terms? Products chosen for one specific use. These four questions get you to that use, and from there to a family and a specification.

External or internal? This picks the family before anything else, and it decides whether retrieval and taper matter.

Solo or shared? Shared use brings in remotes, app control and a second set of cleaning rules you have to document.

Mains or rechargeable? Rechargeable is the current default, and it brings a battery and a charging interface into your compliance and shipping paperwork.

What is the cleaning burden? Removable sleeves, seams, closures and charging ports decide how quickly you can clean and dry a product.

Answer those four and you have a family, a power type and a cleaning route. For the ranking and model-level decision, go to how to choose adult products, which is built for the step you take next.

Safety and Cleaning at a Glance

Keep this procedural in your own copy. What follows is cleaning and storage practice, not a safety guarantee or a health claim.

Surfaces. Smooth, continuous surfaces clean predictably. Residue collects where a surface stops being continuous: seams, moulding lines, button recesses, charging ports and the lip of a removable sleeve. When you review a sample, check every one of those points and ask whether a user could actually clean it.

Cleaning by rating. Match the method to the IPX numeral you actually hold, and nothing above it. A splash-rated product gets a wiped surface, a jet-rated product can go under a running tap, and only an immersion-rated product belongs in standing water. Never submerge an unrated device, and never assume a higher numeral covers the tests below it, because the water numerals are not cumulative. Dry a charging interface fully before you put power near it, and follow the instructions supplied with the product rather than a rule you apply across the range — cleaning by material covers silicone, TPE and motorised units separately.

Storage. Store products separately rather than touching, keep them out of heat and direct sunlight, and keep soft materials away from oils and solvents. Storage and battery care has the detail worth copying into your own instructions.

Sourcing Adult Toys for Your Own Brand?

Tell WINYI your market, price band and categories, and the team will confirm what is feasible at your volume and send spec sheets. WINYI has manufactured adult toys in Shenzhen since 2014 and runs design, prototyping, tooling, production, testing and packing from one 5,000 square metre facility, with more than 30 designers and more than 50 mould masters in house.

All seven families on this page are made in house, in liquid silicone and ABS among other materials. You can request compliance documentation, including CE reports, RoHS and REACH files and ISO 9001 and BSCI certification, with scope confirmed per model and per market. Project drawings and prototype data are handled under NDA, and mould ownership, exclusivity and NDA scope are agreed in writing before tooling starts.

Order quantities depend on the model and on how much you change. Selected production-ready models start from around 100 pieces, while custom colours, functions, packaging or tooling are quoted at the brief stage, so treat any figure as a conditional range until it is confirmed for your project. Clear your intended brand name in each market you plan to sell in too, since availability in one territory says nothing about another.

Read how the OEM and ODM service works end to end, or send your requirement to WINYI for a quotation and samples.

FAQ

What is a sex toy?

A sex toy is a device designed to stimulate the body for sexual pleasure; the category covers vibrators, love eggs, male strokers, cock rings, anal toys, Kegel balls and app-controlled devices, and the same products are also called sexual toys, sex aids, marital aids and adult toys. Those seven families are organised by body area and mechanism rather than by price.

What are sexual toys, and is the term the same?

Yes, sexual toys and sex toys are interchangeable terms for the same category. Pick one of them and use it consistently across your catalogue and packaging.

What are sex aids, and what are marital aids?

Both are older, softer synonyms for the same category of products. Neither term carries a clinical meaning, and neither one signals a medical device.

What are adult toys?

Adult toys is the broadest retail term, covering the same seven families plus accessories such as lubricant, storage and cleaning products. You will often see retailers use it as a store-wide label rather than as a product category.

Which category should a first-time buyer start with?

An external vibrator is the usual starting point, because it has the widest tolerance and the lowest learning curve. It also asks nothing of you on retrieval features or sizing.

Are sex toys safe to use?

Follow the cleaning and storage instructions supplied with the product, and keep any water exposure inside the IPX rating you hold. No device suits every user, and nothing on this page is medical advice.

What does IPX mean on an adult toy?

IPX is a water ingress-protection numeral defined by IEC 60529, where each numeral corresponds to a specific laboratory test. It describes a test condition on a new unit rather than a lifetime guarantee.

Do you need to clean a new product before first use?

Yes. Clean it according to the instructions supplied with it, and check the surface and seams for moulding residue while you do.
